Born in Los Angeles, California, August 13, 1952 in a prosperous family. His parents, Herb and Shirley Ritz, owned a successful furniture business. For education Herb moved on some time on the East Coast and entered the Bard College in New York, where he studied economics and art history. While studying in college Ritz recognized his parents, that he was gay, and the understanding and support from them. After college he returned to Los Angeles where he began working a sales representative company of their parents.
In the 70th Ritz takes an interest in photography and began to attend night classes. The turning point was the case at the gas station where he meets a young man and decides to take his picture. The young man later became a famous actor, Richard Gere (Richard Gere). Photography brings the Ritz some income, and he decides to take up photography more seriously.
Ritz quickly seeking recognition as a master of art and commercial photography.
