Born in Aylesbury, a small market town in England, Simon Harsent’s passion for photography grabbed him from an early age. He enroled to study the subject at Watford College and, after graduating, he went on to assist some of London’s top photographers. In order to pursue his passion further, he left London and with it another great love – Chelsea Football Club – when he moved to Australia in 1988.
While Australia’s positive, can-do spirit can seem alien and confusing to your average Englishman, Harsent took the opportunity to quickly establish himself as one of the country’s most exciting young photographers. He worked on some of Australia’s most decorated advertising campaigns, winning numerous national and international awards including: Cannes Lions, One Show, Clio, D&AD, London International, and Australia’s first Cannes Grand Prix.
In 1997, after almost a decade at the top of his profession in Australia, Simon was keen for a new challenge and moved to New York to further his career as a fine art and commercial photographer.
Harsent has become one of the most awarded photographers in the world and his work has been featured in a host of magazines and books such as Archive, Campaign Brief, Creativity, Communication Arts, Capture, Graphis, Photo, the D&AD Art Direction book and Photo District News. Harsent’s work is also included in the permanent collection at both the Queensland Art Gallery and The Powerhouse Museum.
Currently dividing his time between New York and Sydney, Harsent continues to work on award-winning campaigns for some of the world’s top advertising agencies and designers while working on gallery projects such as his 2009 collection, Melt.
Simon has a son, Declan, who has inherited his father’s love of Chelsea Football Club and creative swearing.
