Notorious for drugs and crime, Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City was once thought to be the most densely populated place in the world. Over 50,000 people were crammed into 300 interconnected high-rise buildings, which made for intolerably unsanitary conditions and anarchic political turmoil.
Photographers Greg Girard and Ian Lambot spend five years living in the Walled City and documented the lives of its residents. Although the city was evacuated and torn down in 1992, these incredible photos give vivid insight into daily life within the compact city walls.
