Through the intimacy with her subjects and her cinematic vision, New York based photographer Stephanie Pfriender Stylander has created iconic images for the last 20 years.
Stephanie’s life in photography started during her high school years at one of the many beloved rock & roll concerts of the time. At one of the memorable Kink’s concert, her friends were taking pictures of the band performing and the intrigue of the little machine with its numbers and dials, combined with the following day’s experience of the concert reappearing in the darkroom played to Stephanie’s curious nature. The process of bringing back to life the memories of the previous night as pictures was pure magic.
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of Visual Arts in New York, Stephanie went on to assist the legendary photographer Art Kane. Her career began in the early 1990s when Stephanie moved to Milan and Paris and quickly earned a reputation for creating evocative images. Her work graced the pages of British GQ, French Glamour and Uomo Harper’s Bazaar. Her inherent taste of subject was character over beauty and this led important fashion and creative directors to commission portraits of actors and musicians. Ultimately this led Stephanie to photograph some of the most cultural artistic icons of our time such as: Keith Richards, Bjork, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, Heath Ledger, Nicole Kidman and Aretha Franklin to name a few.
Her editorial and commercial assignments take her all over the globe, her work is seen in magazines such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, GQ and Interview. Stephanie has been included in group shows at the Howard Greenberg, James Danziger, Serge Sorroko in New York, the Spazio ex Ansaldo in Milan galleries, along with The International Center of Photography. She has also lectured at The Art Director’s Club and The School of Visual Arts.
