Al Vandenberg (b. 1932) studied photography with Alexi Brodovich, Richard Avedon and Bruce Davidson. His first photographs were taken on the streets of New York collecting images of poverty, urban low-life and ethnic minorities. Vandenberg then exhibited these pictures at the Smithsonian Institute for the President’s War on Poverty. He then began a career in commercial photography for ten years before leaving this to continue his personal work. His projects have seen him document people on the street in China, Laos, New York and London, which he did extensively in the 60s.
