Matt grew up in a small town in the Central Valley of California, where large agricultural areas are houses for the poorest communities in the United States.

His first pictures he made at a young age, working for a newspaper photographer. Matt went on to study Latin America and the history of labor in the United States, studying at the University of San Francisco, where he earned a bachelor’s degree with honors. Early trip to Mexico, Central and South America have deepened his interest in the changing rural economy, migration and cultural change.

Matt’s work received awards such as the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation, California Arts Council, Pictures of the Year International, California Council for the Humanities, Alexia Foundation for World Peace, Sunday Magazine Editors Association, Communication Arts, American Photography, Lightwork. His work has been named a finalist prize Pulitzer Prize and received a Golden Eye award from the World Press Photo Foundation.
