|Eric Klemm lives and works on Salt Spring Island, near Vancouver, Canada.
He first studied graphic design in Trier, Germany, and turned seriously to photography in 1968 when he became affiliated with Willy Fleckhaus, art director of the (then) legendary German magazine Twen. Living in Heidelberg and Duesseldorf, Klemm contributed to top magazines such as: Stern, Zeit Magazin, the German edition of Playboy, LUI, and others.
In 1972 he became a member of the prestigious Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Photographie.
After living fifteen years on a tropical island of the Maldives and seven years in France, Klemm immigrated to British Columbia, Canada, in 1998. A few years later in 2004, some of Richard Misrach’s large scale work exhibited at the Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, inspired him to pick up his large format camera again this time to work solely as a photo related artist.
Eric Klemm has his work in private and corporate collections in Germany, Canada, the USA, including museums as: the Portland Art Museum, Oregon, USA, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, the National Portrait Gallery, London, England, the Saarland – Museum, Saarbruecken, Germany, and the Center for Fine Art Photography, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA.
His large scale prints have been featured widely in numerous solo – and group exhibitions, including solo shows at the 2006 Foto Fest Biennial in Houston, USA, the 2006 Foto & Photo Photography Festival Cesano Maderno, Milan, Italy, and the 2008 CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival.
Klemm’s break came in 2009, when Steidl Publishers launched his book Silent Warriors – Portraits of North American Indians at the Frankfurt International Book Fair highly acclaimed by the German press. The project was awarded 1st prize at PX3, Prix de la Photographie, Paris. His new book: Italian Journey – inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s famous diary Italienische Reise is soon to follow. The project has already been awarded 1st prize Landscape Portfolio at The Worldwide 2010 Annual Pollux Awards.
Eric Klemm works with LUMAS Galleries in Berlin, New York, Paris, London, Zurich, Vienna, and 6 major German cities, he is one of the principal artists of Kipton Art New York, and represented by Canadian galleries as: Mayberry Fine Art, Toronto, the Pegasus Gallery for Canadian Art, Salt Spring Island, and Luz Gallery, Center for the Photographic Arts, Victoria.
