Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin have been showing their work at Matthew Marks Gallery since van Lamsweerde’s 1997 show The Widow, her first non-group exhibition in the United States. The duo, also highly successful in fashion photography, was an early innovator in the computer manipulation and combination of images. The artists are known for commercial and fine art work that confounds art and fashion and questions the social roles of age, gender, and technology.
Both artists were born in Amsterdam—van Lamsweerde in 1963 and Matadin in 1961. Van Lamsweerde made her United States debut in a group show at P.S.1, the duo’s photographs were exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1995, and they had their first solo show, at the Kunsthaus Zürich, in 1996. They are represented in the collections of several museums, including the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. Van Lamsweerde and Matadin live and work in New York.
