Marrie Bot has worked as a photographer for more than thirty years. For her documentary work she often chooses universal human themes that are surrounded by a taboo. She is widely known for her black and white photographs in her series Miserere (1984) on the great pilgrimages of penance in Europe, The Burden of Existence (1988) about people with mental handicap and A Last Farewell (1998) devoted to the funeral and mourning rituals in the multicultural Netherlands. Geliefden – Timeless Love (2004) is her first series of colour photographs. With this series, she once again demonstrates her originality by illuminating the theme of the erotic in later life.
